Exhibition and Awards Ceremony for a book launching. Printing by Design, Design by Printing, Cityscapes, is Sidney Printing’s bound volume of six fold-out (36"x12”) spreads depicting various aspects of Cincinnati. The book is experimental and is used to demonstrate the latest in printing technology. The designs include die cut, metallic inks, dot-line conversions, and as many as twelve colors per spread. Joe Bottoni was one of of 6 designers selected to work on this collaboration.

50 graphic designers from the U.S.A. were invited to participate in this exhibit. Each designer was asked to submit a poster that demonstrated uniqueness and excellence, and had appeared in a design annual during the 1980s. Throughout 1990 the exhibition traveled to multiple locations across the United States.

WOW…ORIGINAL…RUMOR…DEAD…E42…M36…

An invitational exhibition of one-of-a-kind works by American and European designers. 36 international design educators were invited to participate in this exhibit. Each designer was provided three identical visual elements to work with: a twelve inch square grid of equally spaced dots one inch apart, a black and white illustration of a human eye, and the word “word.” The participants, to name just a few, included such respected designers as Armin Hofmann, Michael Manwaring, Katherine McCoy and Sharon Poggenpohl.

Fifty-Five Selected Works

Mike Zender and Joe Bottoni each submitted 55 pieces of graphic design for this exhibit. Additionally, they each presented a lecture on how design education has changed over the past 25 years (1960-85). The lectures were illustrated with slides of work produced by both designers when they were students, and by work produced by their present students. Following the lectures they held two weeklong workshops for the junior and senior graphic design students.

Ohio Designs: The Arts is a collection of posters gathered from many of Ohio’s cultural institutions and organizations. A total of 750 entries were submitted from which 69 were selected. The competition was sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council. The resulting exhibition, January, 1984, reflects the state of contemporary poster design as well as its history. The exhibit will be continually shown in various U.S.A. cities and in several foreign countries.

STA 100 Show: 1,700 entries were submitted from North America to the Society of Typographic Arts, but only 100 were accepted. The show opened in Chicago, September, 1983. The exhibit also went on display at the ITC Center in New York, February, 1984, and on the campus of Southern Illinois University in the St. Louis area during the spring of 1984.
