Joseph Bottoni managed his own graphic design firm serving local and national clients from 1968 to 2005. He taught at the University of Cincinnati in the Graphic Design Program from 1969 to 2010.

His work has been recognized in national and international exhibits and juried shows, including representation in the American Institute of Graphic Arts, American Center for Design, Society of Typographic Arts, Mead Library of Ideas, Design Excellence: 50 Top Posters of the ‘80s (University of Tennessee), International Poster Exhibition (Listowel, Ireland) and Ecole Superieure D’ Arts Graphique (Paris, France). His work has appeared in professional publications and books. These include Print’s Regional Design Annual, AIGA Graphic Design USA Annual, Society of Typographic Arts Annual, Design Journal Communication Arts Annual (Seoul, South Korea), Graphis Poster Annual, Design Management Journal, Top Symbols and Trademarks of the World, Print Magazine Casebook, Visual Puns in Design, Letterheads: A Collection from Around the World, and Getting Unlimited Impact with Limited Color.

He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning. He was appointed as an instructor in the Graphic Design Program in 1969. He was promoted to an associate professor with tenure in 1977, and promoted to professor in 1986. He retired in 2010. His teaching responsibilities primarily focused on third and fourth year communication design courses in the graphic design program. He received several recognitions for his teaching. These include being guest lecturer and juror at the Ecole Superieure D’ Arts Graphique, Paris, 1986, one-week guest lecturer at the California State University, Sacramento, 1989, and University of Cincinnati, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, Annual Award for Outstanding Teaching,1975, 1980 and 1994.
